Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
