A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
